Located in Delaplane, VA, Sky Meadow State Park is just over an hour from DC. It is on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains and with hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and fishing, makes for the perfect day trip. Trade in the hustle and bustle of the city for the serene rolling hills of Fauquier County.
Sky Meadow offers 22 miles of hiking, with easy, moderate, and difficult trails running throughout the park. If you’re feeling really adventurous, there is even access to the Appalachian Trail. Three miles of the Appalachian Trail run through the park!
The park offers a variety of educational exhibits and activities. Knowledgeable park rangers and volunteers share information about the history of the area, geology, local plants and animals, and tips and tricks for safe backcountry camping. The Children’s Discovery Area even offers activities for kids!
In addition to hiking, Sky Meadow has over 10 miles of bridle trails. You can’t rent horses at the park, but there is a parking lot for trailers for those of you with horses. Needless to say we have not explored the park by horse--but lots of people do and it looks like fun!
Our guilty pleasure is stopping in the town of Marshall, VA on our way to Delaplane. With an idyllic small-town feel, downtown Marshall has some of the best food shops and bakeries around. Don’t just take it from us, even the Obamas and Oprah agree! We fill our picnic basket with sandwiches, drinks, and a few sweet treats for a gourmet picnic at the park.
After a day of exploring the state park, you will often find us relaxing at one of the many nearby wineries. Now a hot spot for vineyards, Virginia wine does not disappoint. Large and small vineyards are scattered throughout the rolling hills of western Virginia, offering a little something for everyone and views for days.
